Grottammare is a town in the Marche region located on the coast called 'riiera delle palma'. It is a well-known tourist resort that offers not only splendid beaches but also a rich historical center and a very suggestive ancient village. In the upper part of the city, the medieval village, the first essential stop is the Teatro dell'Arancio from here you can admire the entire Marche coast. The Theater overlooks Piazza Pereti which is the heart of the ancient village, on which there are also other buildings not to be missed: the church of San Giovanni Battista, the Palazzo Priorale and the Altana dell'Orologio. Do not forget the Torrione della Battaglia, a military and defensive structure dating back to the 16th century which today houses the museum dedicated to Pericle Fazzini (an important sculptor of the 20th century), and the church of Santa Lucia. A place of worship wanted by Pope Sixtus V on the ground of his birthplace, and built by the architect Fontana. An important building also from an architectural point of view for what it represents, that is a new and different structure compared to the past, wanted by a pope who represented many innovations in the religious world in just five years of pontifical. It therefore wanted to be a one-of-a-kind building full of symbolism.
