Legend, sea and history

Where: ricadi
(Ricadi)
Genre: culture   nature   folklore   useful information

In the province of Vibo Valentia, within inlets and promontories, there is a village surrounded by an intriguing Homeric legend and bathed by a sublime sea: Ricadi (Ricàdi). One cannot fail to admire the natural beauty of the famous beach of Capo Vaticano, which has a mountainous landscape closely linked to the clear waters. It is believed that Ulysses passed through the coast of Ricadi during the episode of the Song of the Sirens, which makes the discovery of this citadel, where the sea is king, even more interesting. In addition to the legend, from a historical point of view, Ricadi is dominated by Arab-Byzantine architecture, small traces of an immense remote, singular and fascinating past. Walking through the streets and alleys of the village you can see two monuments similar to each other in structure: the Church of San Zaccaria and the Church of San Pietro al Vaticano. Externally the structures, for façade and windows, appear very simple (and beautiful in their simplicity), but the real charm of the buildings can be seen inside. In addition to the works dedicated to the saints to whom the churches are dedicated, there are frescoes, columns and other elements belonging to different cultures, beliefs and eras and which make the monuments a unique mosaic to be discovered. As well as Recadi itself.
