Piuro, the rediscovered necropolis

Where: piuro
(Piuro)
Genre: culture

Piuro is a small Lombard town in the province of Sondrio; located at 390 meters, it has 1,900 inhabitants. It is a scattered municipality, i.e. formed by multiple hamlets without a real historic center. The inhabitants of Piuro are experiencing a strong emotion, discovering that their country has even more ancient origins of hundreds of years. To rewrite the history of Piuro the archaeological excavation campaign started in 2016, with the involvement of various administrations, which has brought to light many findings of relevance. University students of archeology were also involved in the excavation campaign for educational purposes and were able to gain direct experience on the excavation site. Entire rooms of housing structures have come to light ranging from the eighth to the eleventh century, in the lower part of the excavation. In the upper part, on the other hand, a necropolis area was found, perhaps connected to a religious building. But the most sensational discovery is the discovery of three burials dating back to the early Middle Ages. Piuro therefore obtains a total reinterpretation of its history which is then set back by at least 800 years compared to known historical documents. Its history must be totally rewritten, even touching the late Roman period. Finally, we will no longer talk about Piuro in relation to the devastating landslide that completely canceled it in 1618.
