Visit to Santa Fiora

Where: santa-fiora
(Santa Fiora)
Genre: culture   wine and food   fun

Following the winding road in the Amiata wood, we arrive at the village. Piazza Garibaldi is the main square where you can see the watchtowers of the Aldobrandeschi, who had a Duchy here since 1624. Walking along Via Lungo, inhabited by Jewish families in 700, you can meet medieval houses with three doors that symbolize birth, marriage and death. Passing the Porta San Michele we arrive at the heart of the village, the Peschiera degli Sforza. In 1380 the city was in fact conquered by the Sienese and experienced an architectural rebirth. Surrounded by a beautiful rose garden, the tank, built for trout farming, is fed by the waters of the Fiora river. The fall of the water downstream was also used as a driving force for the ironworks, fullers and mills. The facing Church of the Madonna della Neve, in addition to the paintings by Nasini, houses the resurgence of Fiora under the floor. You cannot miss a lunch stop with a plate of traditional Pici with pecorino cheeses.
