For a golden handkerchief

After the harvest and on the occasion of the cleaning of the barrels, the Race of the barrels takes place. The party begins the day before in Villa Col dei Canali, a town a few kilometers from Costacciaro. We drink, eat, have fun and make fun of each other in the taverns where the villagers warm up their muscles for the next day's run. Villanti and costacciaroli compete to take back the golden handkerchief, like that time when a thin Frenchman dressed in black stole it, claiming ownership. For the course and the streets the coopers pull the rudder, between music and flag-wavers, in a tradition that is repeated on the second Sunday of November. In 1823 the race experienced an interruption caused by the fights of the contenders, resumed in 1950 the race takes place in a peaceful and hilarious way. The village is located on the slopes of Monte Cucco, in the Chioscio Valley, and is of Roman foundation. On this occasion we visit the Etruscan bridge over the Sirco river and the 13th century church of San Francesco. With the paths 293 and 280 you reach Pantanella and Punta Sassopecoraro.
