Things to do in Italy > Giglio Island

The naturalistic and food and wine beauties of the Giglio Island

Where: isola-del-giglio
(Isola del Giglio)
Genre: nature   wine and food

Isola del Giglio is part of the Tuscan archipelago, and is famous among tourists for its pristine emerald waters. Here nature is still wild and another name of the place reminds us of it, which is that of 'goat island'. Isola del Giglio is made up largely of granite, and this has always made it the ideal habitat for rock animals, such as goats. The local granite was used in the past to make columns that today decorate some important monuments, such as the Tower of Pisa. The island is also known for its food and wine excellences. One of the typical sweets is called panficato, which has origins in the eighteenth century and is linked to the raids of the Pirate Barbarossa. It consists of figs, almonds, chocolate, hazelnuts and jam, and goes perfectly with a local wine that is Ansonaco. This wine is defined as 'heroic' as the vines from which it is obtained are grown on inaccessible and very difficult to care for terraces. Its flavor is therefore unmistakable, as it is the result of a direct link with the territory.
