The historic center of Sarnano

Where: sarnano
(Sarnano)
Genre: culture

Sarnano is a small town, with just over 3000 inhabitants, located on the north-eastern side of the Sibillini Mountains, halfway between Camerino and Ascoli Piceno, at 539 meters above sea level. The incasato is divided between the ancient village and the recently built one, which is located on the opposite hill. All the cultural and artistic history of the town is contained in the historic center, which has been almost completely restored in full respect of the original layout. The dominant element is terracotta, with its characteristic red color, which goes well with the greenery that surrounds the village. The beating heart of the historic center is the square, around which there are public buildings and the church of Santa Maria di Piazza Alta. Inside there are considerable works, first of all the frescoes by Lorenzo d'Alessandro known as Severinate. His paintings are considered an example of the Marche and national Renaissance. Also noteworthy is the entrance portal to the church, made of white stone and depicting the transit of the Madonna.
