Walking with Celestino

Where: lettomanoppello
(versante orientale Maiella)
Genre: events    culture   nature   fun   useful information

The path leads to the Grotta di S Angelo and retraces the path of the hermits Celestino and Onofrio who lived here in asceticism. The path is indicated with an S which refers to spirituality. S. Angelo is the protector of waterways and the cave we visit is located among the boulders around the river of the same name. In spring the path goes along the slope, among gorse and roses in bloom, mountain views still covered in winter snow. Many Toros, the ancient pastoral buildings, are visited from the trail. Their dry-stone wall architecture is stunning and indicates the uniqueness of Maiella rural life. Every year in May there is a procession to the cave that since ancient times celebrates the victory of the Lombards over the Saracens in Gargano. Sacred and profane as well as the ruins of the temple that surround the large cave. The source of the Garzillo ensures fresh water all year round and forms small pools where you can cool off. Tasting the spiritual fabric of the place, you will have the opportunity to meet the small animals that quench their thirst here.
