(Bagheria)
Genre: culture

Bagheria is a large Sicilian center in the province of Palermo; it rises at 78 meters above sea level and has 56,000 inhabitants. Of not remote origin, it was born as a pleasant recreational place of the noble families Butera and Branciforti who chose it as a temporary residence. The original urban fabric develops on these noble villas and the modest houses of the servants in tow at the end of the 1600s. In the 1700s, however, the urban development undergoes a significant surge and in the mid-700s the current urban layout is outlined: Corso Butera, Corso Umberto first, the Mother Church was built in 1771. The noble palaces needed expert hands and therefore artisans, painters, architects, engineers intensely populated Bagheria in this period, which was enriched with history in just three centuries of existence. A picturesque meeting place for princes and sovereigns, an excellent health resort, Bagheria is nestled between the gulfs of Palermo and Termini between the scent of the gardens that surround it and the brackish breeze of the sea. The noble villas reached their maximum splendor at the time of Queen Carolina of Naples. It was the birthplace of the famous painter Renato Guttuso. The current messy building development, without any control, has literally devoured the wonderful villas.
