(Bolzano)
Genre: culture   nature

Bolzano is a provincial capital of Trentino Alto Adige; it stands 262 meters above sea level and has 107,000 inhabitants. The visit can only start from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a true jewel of Gothic architecture; on the outside it is decorated with gargoyles, balustrades and statues, inside there are frescoes from the Giotto school. Continuing we meet Piazza Walther, dedicated to the medieval storyteller, and then Piazza delle Erbe, the famous fruit-bearing garden market; here is the fountain of Neptune. It is pleasant to get lost in the streets of the center such as Via dei Portici, Via Bottai, with its wrought iron signs. To visit the church of the Franciscans, with an interior illuminated by stained glass windows 44 meters high; to visit the Gothic cloister with trefoil arches and a precious cycle of frescoes from the Giotto school. The South Tyrolean archaeological museum is very interesting, where the mummy of Otzi, the man who came from the ice, is kept. Absolutely to visit the Roncolo castle, called the illustrated manor for its cycle of medieval profane frescoes depicting the world of court life, chivalry and noble fashion. Lake Carezza is a shining jewel with its crystalline waters and its forest of spruce and white firs, unfortunately partly devastated by the tornado of 2018. Last stop at the Messner museum, inside the Firmiano castle, where the theme the man-mountain relationship is central.
