Nature and beauty in the province of Isernia: the Abbey of Castelpetroso and the Lake of Castel San Vincenzo

(Lago di Castel San Vincenzo e Abbazia di Castelpetroso)
Genre: nature   fun   useful information

Castelpetroso is a village in the province of Isernia, known above all for the Abbey, the Basilica Minore dell'Addolorata. Here, in 1888, the Virgin appeared to two local peasants and later also to the then bishop of Bojano. It was therefore decided to build the religious building which was consecrated only in 1975. It is a place of pilgrimage and its geographical position, at an altitude of 820 meters, makes it suggestive and immersed in the quiet of nature. A few kilometers from the Basilica it is possible to reach the village of Castel San Vincenzo with its artificial lake built in the 1950s for hydroelectric purposes. It is immersed in the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, surrounded by woods and the peaks of the Mainarde. This makes the place very impressive. Perfect place for nature lovers also for the possibility of following the paths and via ferratas on the surrounding mountains. The lake is also suitable for swimming, it is possible to rent boats and pedal boats, go hiking and water sports.
