Comacchio, the little Venice

Where: comacchio
(Comacchio)
Genre: culture

Comacchio is a town of about 21,000 inhabitants in the province of Ferrara and is part of the towns that rise on the Po Delta. Also called the 'little Venice' for the many canals that cross it, the city offers many attractions for tourists. For example, in the central Via Ugo Bassi there are two important historic buildings: the Civic Tower also known as the Clock Tower and the Loggia del Grano. The real symbol of the town, however, is the architectural complex of Trepponti built by the architect Luca Danese in 1638. It consists of 5 staircases that culminate in a stone rise. From here the Pallotta canal branches off into the canals of Salara, Sant'Agostino, Borgo and San Pietro. The Ponte degli Sbirri, also built by Luca Danese and named for its proximity to the old city prison, is also picturesque. Finally, the Cathedral of San Cassiamo dating back to around 1700 and the suggestive Loggiato dei Cappuccini with its 143 arches supported by as many marble columns are worth a visit.
