Bagnacavallo is a town in the province of Ravenna, in the heart of Romagna. It rises 11 meters above sea level and has 16,500 inhabitants. At its gates is the 7th century Pieve di San Pietro in Silvis, one of the best preserved in the entire region. The ancient historical nucleus of Bagnacavallo has a medieval plan. In the heart of the town stands the church of San Francesco with an adjoining convent and continuing on to the arcaded road that crosses the entire historic center with remarkable charm. The town hall and the Goldoni theater, a small miniature 'staircase', overlook the central square. The new square is the most admired tourist site, with an oval structure, all arcaded, it dates back to 1758; it was built for the purpose of selling foodstuffs. Today fully restored it houses typical shops of local artisans. Another site not to be missed is the garden of the simple with an adjoining interesting botanical garden. Bagnacavallo was the birthplace of the writer and journalist Leo Longanesi. The town boasts the curiosity of being mentioned in Dante's purgatory. Last stop at the Shrine of the Fallen.
