Isola del Liri, an architectural masterpiece of nature

Where: isola-del-liri
(Isola del Liri)
Genre: culture   nature

For decades, the silence of this town in the heart of Ciociaria has been interrupted by the roar of an imposing waterfall that flows with imperious beauty between the ancient fortress and dense vegetation. Isola del Liri boasts a unique spectacle in the world, endowed by its geographical position and a particularly generous nature. Here arose the first and most important paper mills which for long years constituted a very important economic resource of the place. Today the paper mills have lost that luster, but thanks to an impressive restoration of the factories it is still possible to admire those ancient glories, such as, for example, in the ancient convent. Among the recovered industrial buildings, the Lanificio San Francesco occupies a prominent place, today the seat of the municipal offices and an auditorium where past and present meet to witness a golden age in which it is important to restore enamel. Walking through the alleys of its center you frequently come across historical references dating back to past eras, but what draws the most attention is the magnificent medieval castle Boncompagni Viscogliosi whose tower proudly dominates the surrounding landscape. Isola del Liri was the cradle of paper factories and hydroelectric plants, real masterpieces of hydraulic engineering, but in the past it also opened its doors to Catholic worship with numerous churches present on its territory. Of particular frieze and beauty is the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo Martire, rich in suggestive frescoes and marble inlays. A territory rich in history, nature and art, but also in music (Isola del Liri is twinned with the homeland of the blues New Orleans) and high quality food and wine products. If these elements were not enough to have stimulated the curiosity to visit these places, just remember that Isola del Liri is the only city in the world to be crossed by a waterfall that alone is worth the whole ticket.
