Admiring Gallipoli

Where: gallipoli
(Gallipoli)
Genre: nature   folklore   useful information

We are in Salento and today we are going to visit one of the most touristic cities and especially loved by young people: Gallipoli. The name of the ancient village derives from the Greek colonies and means, certainly not surprisingly, 'beautiful city'. Conquered by the Romans after being a Byzantine fortress, in the late eleventh century, it passed into the hands of the Normans. Entering the historic center, barricaded on an islet, we admire the wonders of this village. Among the main wonders we admire the Aragonese Castle, connected to the land through a ravelin, a wooden drawbridge, on which the catapults and cannons that were used to defend the city are still kept today; within the walls we can admire the typical whitewashed houses, with the terraced roofs and the characteristic balconies, the mignani. Continuing we admire the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, located at the highest point of the Old Gallipoli and among the best expressions of Salento art and again the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Canneto and the Church of Santa Maria della Purità. Before leaving the city we can only take a dip in one of the wonderful beaches that surround the village.
