La Dolcissima, the red onion from Breme

Where: breme
(Breme)
Genre: culture   wine and food

Breme is a village of medieval origin located in Lomellina, at the confluence of the Po and Sesia rivers. Today it is known above all for its gastronomic excellence: the red onion of Breme. The red onion of Breme has been a Slow Food presidium since 2020 and boasts the title De. CO (municipal denomination of origin). This onion has a very delicate flavor that has earned it the epithet of 'the sweetest'. Every year a festival is dedicated to it, where you can taste the local specialties that use it as the main ingredient. The Novalesi monks, who founded the village of Breme, planted this particular variety of onion. Today it is grown only in this area, so its production is very limited. What was once the convent of the monks today is the seat of the municipality. However, it is very interesting to visit the residual spaces of the convent destination: the refectory, the crypt, the cloister, the kitchen and the icebox. Next to the refectory there is also an exhibition entitled 'Corner of memories'.
