Valeggio sul Mincio is an Italian town in the province of Verona, crossed by the river Mincio, has a municipal area that extends from the morainic hills to the Mantua area. The city is made up of seven hamlets: Borghetto, Fontanello, Foroni, Salionze, Santa Lucia ai Monti, Vanoni and Remelli. The hamlet of Borghetto is the best known, and is included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy. It rises in the valley of the Mincio river at the foot of the Visconti bridge and boasts a very ancient history. Walking through the center of Borgetto you will find the church of San Marco Evangelista built on an ancient parish church dedicated to Santa Maria; the church is in neoclassical style. Inside there are several works of well-known prestige such as the Madonna and Child, an eighteenth-century altarpiece with the Madonna, San Francesco and Sant'Antonio and a beautiful 17th-century crucifix. In the cemetery behind the church it is possible to visit tombstones and historical relics and the apse of the ancient parish church. Of particular relevance are the tombstones scattered around the city that recall the events that occurred throughout history. The Borghetto castle, whose appearance has been lost due to the urban expansion, has the classic characteristics of medieval castles. The city of Borghetto is known above all for its water mills still in operation. The Visconti bridge is a suggestive place, it was built by Galeazzo Visconti in 1393 for defensive reasons and to connect the Veronese territories annexed to his domains. The Scaligero Castle of Valeggio sul Micio is located on a long path that starts from Borghetto. The ancient part was destroyed by an earthquake, the round tower remains with a particular horseshoe shape. Legend has it that the spirit of Messer Andriolo da Parma wanders on full moon nights in search of his broken sword. The main attraction of the village is the feast of the knot of love which is held on the third Tuesday of June, with a Guinness table on the Visconti bridge where tortellini from Valeggio sul Mincio are served to more than 4000 diners.
