Where: arcola
(Arcola)
Genre: culture   nature

Arcole stands on a small slope surrounded by hills, the village is considered one of the most characteristic of La Spezia thanks to the fascinating panorama. The village is a classic example of a fortified city that intrigues the visitor thanks to the particular alleys; in the historic center there are small stone houses with small and narrow facades where the loopholes are still present, long and narrow windows used as a shooting point in case of attack. The castle, now the municipal seat, is located in the center of the village; its construction is linked to the history of the town after the raids of the Normans and Saracens. The Pentagonal Tower with its 22 meters of the twelfth century, was the focal point of the defensive system; the tower was accessed through a narrow door still visible today, at the top there are loopholes. The Sanctuary of the Madonna degli angeli has an interior with three naves in which the crypt of the Madonna has been built with well-preserved frescoes and paintings. Not far from Arcola is the district of Baccano, an ancient village that develops longitudinally, where on one side it dominates the Gulf of La Spezia and on the other the Val di Magra. The real jewel of the town of Baccano is the Ville Picedi, a large building surrounded by a wonderful garden to which a small church is attached. Trebiano is an ancient village of the Arcolana community built around its castle, where it is possible to admire the walls and the village with the green of the landscape and the gray of the stones that make up the houses. The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo has a 3-nave structure supported by red marble columns, of notable interest is the wooden crucifix on a square canvas displayed in the left aisle of the parish church. In the village of Cerri there is the church of Sant'Anna which has an austere facade and a bell tower that stands out among the houses; the interior has well-preserved frescoes. The economy of the city is based on the cultivation of vines from which an excellent white and red wine is produced. Thanks to the skilful work of the companies, the event was created: 'Arcola and its wines'. A food and wine and cultural event held in the historic center of Arcola.
