Palmanova, the fortress city in the shape of a nine-pointed star

Where: palmanova
(Palmanova)
Genre: culture   useful information

Located in a very convenient position to reach the main cities of the region, Palmanova is a Friulian municipality known for its nine-pointed star shape, a fortress city dating back to the Venetian era of 1593. The city is accessed via three monumental gates: Porta Udine, Porta Cividale and Porta Aquileia. The center of the star, perfectly hexagonal, is represented by Piazza Grande, the most important square in the city. Here the main buildings overlook and from here all the streets of Palmanova branch off and arrive. Among the most significant buildings is the Cathedral, in Baroque style, which houses a work by Pompeo Randi. The ramparts, and therefore the walls of the fortress city, deserve a visit, which can be reached with various guided tours starting from the Military Historical Museum which is located on the Porta Cividale dungeon. The museum collects uniforms, memorabilia and documents relating to the fighters of Palmanova from its foundation until the Second World War. In Contrada Garzoni it is possible to see the Napoleonic powder magazine, now used for exhibitions and cultural events.
