Bovolone

Where: bovolone
(Bovolone)
Genre: culture

Bovolone rises at the northern limits of the low Veronese plain. Bordered by the Menago river, it has 16,000 inhabitants and is located at 24 meters above sea level. A town with an excellent quality of life, it boasts excellent services, continuous social and cultural activities, tranquility and order. The strategic geographical position, the proximity to its provincial capital Verona, from which it is only 20 kilometers away, have facilitated its development. Crossroads of peoples, Venetians, Illyrians, Etruscans alternated, up to the Romans who built a settlement with the name of castrum bodoloni. It acquired its own characteristics in the 9th century, becoming a feudal county under the control of the powerful bishop of Verona, who around 1000 came to possess 52 fiefdoms. When in the communal age the bishop was stripped of all the fiefs, only that of Bovolone remained, which was one of the oldest. In 1400 the urban center moved from the Roman site but was devoid of the parish church. The bishop of Verona then gave him an oratory which, following various transformations, became the town parish church dedicated to San Biagio. Basically Romanesque style, with Gothic hints, it boasts a valuable bell tower and interior with frescoes and altarpieces of absolute interest. Of note is a statue of the Pietà and a Gothic style tabernacle.
