Visit Strongoli

Strongoli rises on a gentle and flat hill at 342 meters above sea level. Formerly called Petelia, it has 6,400 inhabitants and is located on the Ionian coast of Calabria, in the province of Crotone. Strongoli proves to be interesting from an artistic-monumental point of view, boasting several churches of moderate interest. In the highest part of the city stands the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, built in 1486 on a previous Franciscan monastery. Another church of interest is that of health, so called because it was built with the intention of sheltering the sick in 1613. The cathedral is the church of the Santissimi Pietro e Paolo or church of the bishopric, since it was the bishop's seat; boasts a prestigious interior. Very interesting is the castle built on the acropolis of the old city of Petelia with the function of control and defense against the fearsome Saracens. To conclude, a mention of the excellent local cuisine of which the oil, the sausage, the soppressata and the aged cheese are excellences.
