(Alghero)
Genre: culture   nature

Alghero is a town in Sardinia, in the province of Sassari; it has 41,000 inhabitants. Alghero is dotted with Spanish towers which testify to the difficulty of defending these rugged coasts. Sardinia has been a succession of dominations but in Alghero the signs of the Spanish conquest are more alive than anywhere else. Every corner of the ancient center remembers in the language the Catalan rulers who stormed the fortified village by the Genoese. Today it is the sea that marks the rhythms of the life of the city, its white beach attracts tourists from all over the world and its tourist vocation is easily palpable. Certainly worth visiting are the Catalan walls that enclose the historic center, punctuated by towers. The narrow alleys are the characteristic of the ancient core, from which you can glimpse the domes of the churches, including the colorful one of San Michele, one of the symbols of the city. Noteworthy is the cathedral, from the sixteenth century, late Catalan Gothic, with a rich interior. But the absolute wonder is represented by the promontory of Capo Caccia, of cliff rock, an extraordinarily panoramic point, where griffins and hawks whirl; it hosts the wonderful neptune caves.
