Visiting Grado

Where: grado
(Grado)
Genre: culture   useful information

Today we take you to Grado, a pretty town between land and sea, with more than 1600 years of history. The location is located on an island north of the Adriatic Sea, about an hour's drive from Trieste and Udine and an hour and a half from Venice. We enter the town, along the ancient Roman castro, we admire the Basilica of Sant'Eufemia, built on the pre-existing basilica of Petrus, which we admire entering the magnificent building. Once inside the Basilica a wonderful ivory bishop's chair, donated by order of Heraclitus II and Avori di Grado, also donated by the city of Alexandria in Egypt. Continuing we find the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, an early Christian basilica that overlooks the Campo dei Patriarchi. Inside the Basilica, in the left aisle, there is a wooden statue of the Madonna delle Grazie. We complete our visit by walking again through the narrow streets of the historic center and along the lagoon, punctuated by the casoni, simple houses with thatched roof used in the past by fishermen. We leave Grado taking a step towards Aquileia and Palmanova.
