The Zingaro Nature Reserve

(Riserva naturale dello zingaro)
Genre: nature   useful information

The Zingaro Nature Reserve is a protected area located between the municipalities of San Vito and Castellammare del Golfo, in the province of Trapani. It is possible to reach the reserve by car where, after having parked it in the free parking lot, you can buy the day ticket to go down to the various coves of the reserve, all at the modest price of € 5. The territory was inhabited by a last family of peasants in 1960 and then in 1976 work began for the construction of a road that would have to cover the entire coast, which was prevented with the march of 18 May 1980 by a group of environmentalists. ; with the law 98/1981 the reserve managed by the State Forests of the Sicily Region was officially established. The reserve is divided into three paths: the coastal one, the half-coast one and the high path. The most popular path in summer is the coastal one where you will first find Cala Capreria with a stairway in the rock to be able to access it. The second cove is called Cala del Varo, a natural cove carved into the rock and a cove that can only be reached by boat. After 345 meters it is possible to visit Cala della Disa and Cala Berretta. Cala Marinella takes its name from the homonymous district is a cove with a cave carved into the rock and spread over a rock. Along the way to the next Cala it is possible to admire the weaving museum built on the old houses of 1960 and then the Grotta dell'Uzzo where archaeological finds have been found inside. Cala dell'Uzzo is appreciated for its white gravel beach and crystal clear water. The last cove is called Tonnarella, but it is also the first if you enter the reserve from the San Vito Lo Capo side. The cove is famous for its large beach mixed with gravel, stones and sand.
