Genre: nature   fun   useful information

Lacco Ameno is the smallest town on the island of Ischia, occupies the northwestern part of the island and extends towards Mount Epomeo. The symbol of the town is the 'Lacco Ameno mushroom', that is a green tuff rock that erupted from Mount Epomeo and is about 10 meters high. The characteristic shape is given by the erosion of the waters. The center of the municipality is characteristic of the island with small clubs, shops and colorful houses. Among the churches we remember the Parish of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Basilica / Museum of Santa Restituta, co-patroness of the island. Next to it is the Town Hall Tower, a former Carmelite convent. In the municipality there is also the Villa La Colombaia Museum by Luchino Visconti, the summer residence of the famous artist. In the Archaeological Museum of Pithecusae in Villa Arbusto there are prehistoric finds and remains of the products of Greek potters, as well as the very important Cup of Nestor, the oldest poetic fragment in the Greek language. Not far from the center you can reach the sanctuary of the Madonna di Zaro which, geographically, is already in the territory of the municipality of Forio, bordering Lacco Ameno. Getting there from Lacco is not difficult and can also be done on foot along a path surrounded by nature. The sanctuary was born for the apparitions of the Madonna that began in 1993 and continue today. The place is collected and the site of many pilgrimages.
