(Rocca d'Anfo)

Anfo is a town in the province of Brescia in Lombardy which is located on Lake Idro. The Rocca d'Anfo is undoubtedly the most important monument; is a military complex erected in the fifteenth century by the Venetian Republic, placed to guard the nearby state border with the bishopric of Trento. The Rocca has undergone several modifications by both Napoleon's engineers and Italian engineers. The task of building it in 1450 was entrusted to Count Gian Francesco Martinengo, the works ended in 1490 and entrusted to a supervisor. With the France-Austria pact of 1801, the Rocca, like other military fortresses, passed to French rule. Napoleon ordered the modernization of the structure; the restructuring project included an extension of the moats and drawbridges. The architectural quality of its buildings despite being only a military fortress is amazing, in the restoration work of 1801 the French spared no expense, building a real military Versailles. The observatory is the highest point of the fortress from here it is possible to admire a splendid landscape on the lake between the mountains.
