(Matelica)
Genre: useful information

Matelica is a town of 9401 inhabitants in the province of Macerate in the Marche region and is considered an elegant town. The history of Matelica dates back to 2000 BC. C. where the Umbrians had settled in the Esino river valley, it is only centuries later, however, that the city lives in splendor, it was in fact with the advent of Christianity that the city became a bishopric. Its past is certainly linked to the Papal State and perhaps for this reason that in the city, despite its size, there are 10 churches. The main church of the city is the church of Santa Maria Assunta where the small and precious eighteenth-century crucifix in wood and silver by Giardini is kept. The most striking aspect of Matelica is its history that is breathed in the alleys of the center, in whose maze the possible archaeological and artistic path unfolds. In the Enrico Matteri pizza stands the historic town that houses the municipal art gallery whose spaces contain nineteenth-century works. Inside you can admire the laide of Caio Arrio and a canvas depicting Sant'Onofrio by Salvatore Rosa. Under the coat of arms of the city there is represented the virgin Lauretana protector of the city; the municipality also boasts a collection of drawings by the portraitist Raffaele Fidanza to whom the library is dedicated. Below the body of the building the foundations exist on an archaeological area, which came to light during a work on the electrical systems.
