(Lampione)
Genre: culture   nature

Lampione is an islet 36 meters high, 18 kilometers from Lampedusa and 120 from Tunisia; administratively it belongs to Lampedusa and Linosa, geologically it belongs to the African continental shelf. It is part of the protected marine area of the Pelagie Islands and is a small limestone island lost in the Mediterranean, made up of stratified sea limestones of about 40 million years, much older than the rock of Lampedusa; in fact it is distinguished by the compactness of the rocks, marine deposits are completely absent; here we find caves at sea level which are due to some collapses and not to the erosion of sea water as usually happens; this is due to the low resistance of this type of rock. Lampione is a true earthly paradise if we observe the biological aspect, the mesolittoral plane which includes high and low tides, has particular flora and fauna: we can find brown algae, biogenic structures built by molluscs that protect against water erosion and small crustaceans. Lampione today is uninhabited, the only sign of man is an automatic lighthouse from which the island takes its name, reachable via a path, which starts from a small dock accessible only to small boats.
