The highest artificial waterfall in the world: the Marmore Falls

Where: terni
(Cascata delle Marmore)
Genre: nature   fun   useful information

Just seven kilometers from Terni, it is possible to observe one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Italy: the Marmore Falls. It is a controlled-flow waterfall, the highest man-made waterfall in the world, relying on a total height difference of 165 m, divided into three jumps. The name derives from the calcium carbonate salts present on the rocks, similar to white marble. The water from the waterfall is used to power a hydroelectric plant only at certain times it is possible to see it at its maximum power. The waterfall is located within a natural park and the visit is very easy to deal with. The paths that can be traveled are different, some simpler or more suggestive than others. In addition to the beauty of the waterfall, it is possible to observe various examples of flora and fauna typical of the Mediterranean scrub. There is a pond and a greenhouse. A very suggestive lookout is 'the balcony of lovers', a small terrace at the end of a tunnel that is practically inside the waterfall, a few meters from the water. Another suggestive point is the Specola, reachable by various routes, where it is always possible to see the rainbow.
