Where: voltaggio
(Voltaggio)
Genre: culture   nature

Voltaggio is a small Piedmontese town in the province of Alessandria. It has 700 inhabitants and is located 342 meters above sea level. Located in a highly strategic position, it acts as a crossroads between Liguria and lower Piedmont. Although administratively it belongs to Alessandria, Voltaggio is both culturally and spiritually Ligurian, so much so that it is an honorary municipality of Genoa of which it is considered an enclave in the hinterland. The village retains a splendid Roman bridge as evidence of its considerable importance already in those times. In the thirteenth century it came under the influence of Genoa to leave it only after 1850 when it became Piedmontese. It is home to impressive stately homes, such as Casa Grimaldi, in Gothic style, Palazzo Scorza-Battilana with its decorated ceilings, Palazzo Spinola and Palazzo Galliera, the family that gave more prestige to Voltaggio. Noteworthy is the convent of the Capuchin Friars of 1500, with a splendid art gallery with a sacred-religious theme, one of the most important in Piedmont. Interesting is the Oratory of Sant'Antonio with its treasure chest. The sources of sulphurous water are well known and attract many tourists, to whom an uncontaminated nature is offered between woods and paths.
