In the Aspromonte area, in the valley of its slopes, stands the medieval village of Melicuccà. The Byzantine domination has greatly characterized the area and evidence of this are the remains of the monastery and the church of Sant'Elia lo speleota, which can now be visited under the name of 'cave'. Inside there is still the altar excavated by the saint. The remains of the body of Sant'Elia, found in the cave, are instead kept in the church of the Rosary. Of great interest is the church dedicated to the Madonna dell'Assunta, known as the Church of the Rite or the church of Loreto, located in Piazza Tocco, which houses a statue by Antonello Gagini from Palermo. Next to it, it is still possible to admire the remains of an ancient Franciscan convent. The village is also known for having been the birthplace and death of the poet Lorenzo Calogero, of hermetic current. The nature of the place gives Melicuccà the possibility of producing an oil of great value, around which the economy of the village is built.
