A trip to Ferrara: how to organize a tour to visit a Unesco heritage city

Where: ferrara
(Ferrara)
Genre: culture   nature   useful information

Ferrara is an Emilian city that boasts its historic center in the Unesco World Heritage sites since 1995. Known for having been a prestigious political and social center in the period of the Este, a historic European ruling family. The first stop can only be the Estense castle, the ancient home of the family, located in the center and today it can be visited entirely. The second stop of the tour is Piazza Municipio, with the elegant ducal palace, as the town hall was once called because it was the residence of the Este family before the construction of the castle. Third stop is the well-known Corso Ercole d'Este, one of the most beautiful streets in the world according to Unesco, an example of the expansion of the original streets of the city that had a medieval mold. It continues with Palazzo dei Diamanti, right in corso Ercole d'Este, which takes its name from the decoration of the facade that recalls many diamonds in shape. In the heart of the historic center, the incredible Piazza delle Erbe where the most important buildings are located such as the Cathedral of San Giorgio, the Loggia dei Merciai and Palazzo della Ragione. For a suggestive walk, Via delle Volte is recommended, so called because of the many round arches present in the street. You cannot miss the tour of the city walls that can also be done by bike, and a visit to the church of San Cristoforo alla Certosa, including the monumental cemetery in the surroundings of the Certosa For a little relaxation in the greenery we recommend a stop at Parco Massari, together with the nearby Botanical Garden.
