The holy places of Umbria: from Norcia to Cascia, passing through the path of San Benedetto

(Norcia e Cascia, il cammino di San Benedetto)
Genre: culture   useful information

The town of Norcia is closely linked to San Benedetto, the patron saint of Europe, born here. The main square is dedicated to him, Piazza San Benedetto, in the center of which stands the monument dedicated to him and other important buildings, such as the town hall (dating back to 1300), and of course the Basilica. The famous Basilica dedicated to the Saint seems to have been built right in the same spot as his hometown. Inside the crypt it seems that both the saint and his twin sister, Santa Scolastica were born. Also worth a visit is the Diocesan Museum which preserves historical artifacts, some coming from the Hellenistic necropolis still under study. The life of the Saint has been studded with numerous journeys of evangelization of the Benedictine cult, for this reason it is possible, starting from Norcia going towards Montecassino, to walk the Way of Saint Benedict, through which the most significant places in the life of this Saint can be remembered. . From Umbria, to Lazio up to the borders with Campania. Norcia is also very close to another holy place. Continuing south we arrive in fact in Cascia, a place known for Santa Rita, the saint of impossible cases, born in Roccaporena and raised in the convent of Cascia.
