Castelvecchio Calvisio, a village suspended in time

Where: castelvecchio-calvisio
(Castelvecchio Calvisio)
Genre: culture   nature   useful information

We are in Abruzzo, in a small village suspended in time, Castelvecchio Calvisio, at the foot of Campo Imperatore. Only 127 inhabitants live here and on one side it has the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, located above a thousand meters, it has a very panoramic position overlooking the entire Tirino Valley and the lower part of the Conca Aquilana. Here there are many attractions to visit, many small pearls enclosed in this ancient place made of history. One of the best preserved centers in the area is the Fortified Village, with a medieval cardo-decuman type layout, perhaps of Roman origin. The three doors: Porta di Torre Maggiore, made with a round arch that leads us into the historic center, the Ponte Levatoio, opens onto Palazzo di Marco and dates back to 1600 and finally Porta San Martino or the clock. The Church of San Giovanni Battista built by Piccolomini in 1450, decorated inside in Baroque style with statues and reliquaries. Finally, there are also the evocative ruins of the Churches of San Lorenzo and the medieval ones of Villa San Martino from the eighth century.
