Grosseto is a capital of the Tuscan province, located in the middle of the Maremma. It is the southernmost capital of Tuscany and represents a sort of door, threshold, watershed between southern Italy and Tuscany itself. Just 12 kilometers from the sea, it boasts the most beautiful beaches in the region. The territory was formerly in the hands of the Etruscans, then supplanted by the Romans. The first official document attesting its existence dates back to 803 d. C. Demographically perpetually in difficulty, due to the putrid marshy waters that surrounded it, a source of malaria and disease, despite various interventions, the final reclamation took place between 1950 and 1960. hence the demographic boom. In the Middle Ages it was dominated by the Aldobrandeschi families, of which we find the beautiful palace, and the Medici, authors of the walls that surround it, today a public city park. The heart of the city is Piazza Dante Alighieri, with the Cathedral of 1294 and an interesting interior, the statue of Leopoldo II and the Palazzo Aldobrandeschi. Next to the cathedral stands a column of Roman origin. Another central square is the one dedicated to the Rosselli brothers, which overlooks the Government Palace, with its elliptical-neoclassical shapes. The Archaeological and Art Museum of the Maremma is remarkable for the quantity and quality of its finds.
