Fossano: a city rich in history

Where: fossano
(Fossano)
Genre: culture

Fossano is a picturesque town in the province of Cuneo. Its symbol is the Castle of the Princes of Acaia with its 4 towers that rise above the town. It was built in the 14th century and over the years it has often changed its function, passing from a prison to a stately home to become the University of Veterinary Medicine of the Savoy Kingdom. The first inhabitants who settled in this territory in 1236 founding the city of Fossano were for the most part fishermen who fished trout in the Stura river which then ended up in the royal table in Turin. In the Borgo Vecchio there is the Church of San Giorgio which overlooks a square where there is also Palazzo Tesauro where once there was the magistrate's court. Places of great historical interest are Via Roma, also called Piazza Roma due to its width, which in ancient times was the commercial center of the city and Piazza Castello once considered the political-military center of Fossano. Spectacular is the Cathedral of Santa Maria and San Giovenale where the relics of the latter are kept, as well as the Church of the Holy Trinity. The Diocesan Museum in which there are numerous artistic treasures is also worth a visit.
