Atri is a town of 10,000 inhabitants in Abruzzo, in the province of Teramo. Located at an altitude of 442 meters, it is an artistically very valuable center. In ancient times it was also the capital of the homonymous Duchy. The symbol of the city is certainly the Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, built on a Roman cistern, dating back to the mid-1200s; On the façade there is a remarkable portal and a large rose window, inside with three naves with interesting frescoes, there is also a beautiful Renaissance Baptistery; boasts the highest bell tower in Abruzzo. Other churches worth visiting are those of Santa Reparata, that of Santa Maria di Propezzano and that of San Clemente. The current town hall is located in the Renaissance Palazzo Ducale, seat of the Acquaviva d'Aragona, Dukes of Atri. The municipal theater and Palazzo Illuminati are pleasant. Vestiges of the glorious past are the Roman theater, III-II century BC. C, the ancient port of Atri and the fortified walls of the 10th century with numerous access gates. Atri is famous for the cultivation of licorice.
