Triora, between witches and magic

Where: triora
(Triora)
Genre: culture   folklore   useful information

We are in Liguria, in Triora, in the province of Imperia, one of the most fascinating and mysterious towns in Italy. To reach it you have to go through kilometers of curves and travel through wild lands, so much so that we wonder how someone came up with the idea of building a country right here. Between 1100 and 1200 the town castle was built; these were also the years in which Triora became a real impregnable fortress. Surrounded by city walls, the village was also equipped with five defensive fortresses and the heart of this system was the castle. The village has always had a great religious tradition and walking through its streets it is possible to breathe a very strong sacredness, Christian and pagan, two opposing but very representative historical symbols of the village. It is therefore no coincidence that the current Collegiate Church of Our Lady of the Assumption was built on the foundations of an ancient pagan temple. Inside there are a considerable number of works, even very ancient ones. Triora is famous in particular for the witch hunt that went on until 1589. Even today the atmosphere of the narrow streets of the village provide us with all the material to reconstruct this historical period.
