Discovering Dobbiaco

Where: dobbiaco/toblach
(Dobbiaco)
Genre: culture   nature   useful information

Dobbiaco is a town in the province of Bolzano, has 3,300 inhabitants and stands out at the remarkable altitude of 1250 meters. Surrounded by high snow-capped mountains, thick pines, enchanted lakes, breathtaking nature, it seems to be magically catapulted into a magical land worthy of a fairy tale. Although nature is certainly the queen of Dobbiaco, the artistic heritage present here should not be underestimated. Spectacular is in fact the parish church of San Giovanni, from 1803, emerald green, majestic, with a single nave, with interesting stucco and gold frescoes, bas-reliefs and a remarkable organ; all in rigorous late Baroque style. A historical via crucis starts from the church, one of the most beautiful and important in Europe, 1,200 steps long and ends at the chapel of the Holy Sepulcher. The station structures have a quadrangular base in the Venetian Renaissance style. However, Dobbiaco's pride and joy is the thermoelectric power plant built in 1995, modern, safe, efficient, so much so that it earned the European solar award in 2006. It can be visited, it has an educational path.
