A religious and historical village

Where: sotto-il-monte-giovanni-xxiii
(Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII)
Genre: culture   nature   useful information

The film 'The tree of clogs', winner of the 1978 Cannes Film Festival, portrays life in a highly characteristic and fascinating village in its minimalism. This village, in addition to the cinematographic testimony, gave birth to one of the most admired popes in history. Perhaps it is the right premise to describe Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII, in the province of Bergamo. The village is crossed by two rivers and surrounded by so much nature, its central point or fulcrum is the tower of San Giovanni, home to pilgrimages and religious rites of strong value. The tower houses a complex of buildings that also contains the parish church, which houses the cast of the face and hand of the historic Pope. However, the citadel also offers additional attractions. For example, the Church of Santa Maria in Brusicco houses sixteenth-century frescoes worthy of note and observation. Also worth mentioning are the home of Ca 'Maitino and the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Caneve, a reflection of the simplicity of the village and an important part of the life of John XXIII. Between religion, emotions and nature, tourists can get to know a reality that is unique in its essentiality.
