Things to do in Italy > Cinque Terre

Let's discover the Cinque Terre together

(Cinque Terre)
Genre: culture   nature

The Cinque Terre make Liguria famous not only in Italy, an ancient fishermen's place that still enchants visitors today. They are a jagged stretch of coast and include 5 villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Monterosso and Vernazza. These villages developed in the Middle Ages, hence the splendid castles and towers that characterize the area, but the colorful houses, small harbors and narrow alleys also attract and impress visitors. Riomaggiore, is one of the most famous villages of the Cinque Terre, welcomes us with an enchanting marina and its characteristic houses rise vertically in the valley. Walking through the historic center you arrive at the church of San Giovanni Battista, built in the fourteenth century, a little further on you can admire the ancient castle. Corniglia, is the only one of the villages that does not have a direct outlet to the sea, it can be reached along a long staircase or by bus and is surrounded by vineyards. Passing through the small streets of the center you arrive at the eighteenth-century Largo Taraceo where the oratory of Santa Caterina stands out. Continuing the walk you will reach the lookout 100 meters high which offers a view of the gulf. Vernazza surprises visitors with its splendid church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia which stands on the beach and makes the place unique and evocative. The other building certainly worth visiting is the ancient castle, whose watchtower is one of the few remaining. Monterosso, with its 1500 inhabitants is the largest village in the Cinque Terre, striking the clear difference between the old part, similar to the other villages and the new one, characterized by modern structures. We find some splendid testimonies of its past such as the Aurora tower overlooking the sea. Manarola, the colorful houses climb the rock and the view that the place offers is unforgettable. A characteristic area like the Cinque Terre is difficult to find, but it is perfect for any type of holiday.
