Grottole is a village located in the hills of Matera, one of the oldest Italian settlements. Here, remains of prehistoric and later Greek and Roman settlements have been found. Grottole is a town full of history and the succession of the different populations that have inhabited it have made it characteristic as it is today. The name dates back to the Latin period where the village was formerly called Cryptulae, even if, even before that, the Greeks often used the name kruptai which means cave. In addition to hosting numerous historical buildings such as the feudal castle, the mother church, the Capuchin monastery, the wonderful and ancient Diruta church, the church of San Rocco, the abbey of Sant'Antonio and the convent of the preaching friars . The numerous visible caves were the first settlements of Grottole, subsequently they were used as stables and areas used for animals or for agriculture.
