Grottole: one of the oldest Italian settlements

Grottole is a village located in the hills of Matera, one of the oldest Italian settlements. Here, remains of prehistoric and later Greek and Roman settlements have been found. Grottole is a town full of history and the succession of the different populations that have inhabited it have made it characteristic as it is today. The name dates back to the Latin period where the village was formerly called Cryptulae, even if, even before that, the Greeks often used the name kruptai which means cave.
