Anghiari, a medieval pearl

Where: anghiari
(Anghiari)
Genre: events    culture

Anghiari is a wonderful medieval village with 5,500 inhabitants, at an altitude of 429 meters, in the province of Arezzo. Even though it is just 30 km from Arezzo it falls on the border between Tuscany and Umbria; set on a gravel hill accumulated over the centuries by the flow of the Tiber river that flowed at its feet until the mid 1200s. narrow streets, stone houses, window sills embellished with colorful flowers. Definitely worth a visit are the Badia, or Abbey of San Bartolomeo built on an old rock temple and the Confraternity Palace with the beautiful Madonna della Misericordia. In the plain below Anghiari the famous battle of the same name was fought between the armies of Milan and Florence, with the victory of the latter who therefore took control of the city of Anghiari. The episode was immortalized in a grandiose fresco by Leonardo da Vinci, unfortunately lost.
