Carbonia: the youngest town in Italy, but with a lot of history to tell

Where: carbonia
(Carbonia )
Genre: culture   nature   folklore   useful information

Carbonia is considered the youngest town in Italy because it was founded in the Fascist period by Benito Mussolini, mainly to exploit the coal mines in the area. This aspect is very much reflected in the architecture of the city, with precise geometric lines and no frills. Piazza Roma is the main square, where the Littoria tower still stands today, where Mussolini appeared in the inauguration celebrations of the city. The central theater and the church of San Ponziano also overlook the square, as well as the sculpture created by Giò Pomodoro called Fragment of the Void. Another characteristic and very popular square is Piazza Rinascita, with fountains and decorative trees, behind the civic market, also from the Fascist period, still in use. In the 'neighborhood of the barracks' you can see houses and buildings in typical fascist style, some still marked with the initial of Benito Mussolini. On the other hand, the mines with the processing buildings, all closed for years, are still visible. The main green areas of the city are represented by Monte Rosmarino, a hill perfectly incorporated into the city, the naturalistic area of Is Pireddas and the various pine forests. In Carbonia, however, many archaeological sites can be observed: nuraghe, caves and domus de janas (prehistoric tombs), necropolis, acropolis, and the tombs of the giants in the 'Pineta Nord' of Cortoghiana.
