Acquafraggia di Piuro waterfalls

Where: piuro
(Cascate Acquafraggia)
Genre: nature

Piuro is located in Lombardy in the province of Sondrio and is a scattered Italian municipality with 1903 inhabitants. It is famous for its Acquafraggia waterfalls, in Valchiavenna, which arise at over 3000 meters above sea level and are articulated by marvelous cliffs and cascades of pure and fresh water. Below the watercourse it generates a most beautiful natural phenomenon in the whole province of Sondrio: a dizzying double final jump of almost 170 meters. Due to their majesty and grandeur it is impossible not to notice them even simply passing through the SS 37 of the Val Bregaglia that climbs to the Maloia pass. Even Leonardo da Vinci was struck by their majesty so much that he described them in the Codex Atlanticus. In 1984 the region cataloged them as a natural monument precisely for their beauty. The falls are born from a glacial phenomenon that furrowed the rocks almost 20,000 years ago. In addition to the beauty of the landscape, we can also note the geological and botanical richness of the whole context. Many hiking trails start from the waterfalls, such as the one in Gradoni.
