San Gimignano is a village, walled and adorned with 14 towers, located on a hill overlooking the Val d'Elsa, in the heart of Tuscany and in the province of Siena. In ancient times it was an important customs center; Val d'Elsa, a longitudinal valley near which the river Elsa flows, a left tributary of the Arno, exercised customs power over the Arno and became important for the passage of pilgrims. San Gimignano has an Etruscan structure, which later becomes Roman and from the Middle Ages receives those characteristics that can still be admired today. In the golden age of the village, there were 74 towers, each built by the important families who lived there, with the agreement not to exceed the tower of the Municipality in height. In the mid-nineteenth century a German architect, Von Klenze, who worked for the Duke Leopold of Florence, who was in love with the medieval period and its architecture, rebuilt San Gimignano, transforming it into a medieval city. Since 1990, San Gimignano has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
