A day in the city of chess

Where: marostica
(Castello Inferiore di Marostica)
Genre: culture   nature   wine and food

Marostica, a medieval village in the province of Vicenza, is universally known for the game of chess with living pawns which is played every two years but also has numerous other attractions. For example, food and wine lovers will be able to appreciate the cherry brandies that can be tasted in one of the many local wine bars. In addition to the chess square and grappas, however, we cannot miss the opportunity to visit the Lower Castle, dating back to the fourteenth century. The Lower Castle can be visited every day with an entrance ticket of only five euros. Vittoria, guides us to the rooms inside: the parade ground, the council hall that still hosts the major cultural events of the city, the astanteria and the fireplace room, the chess game museum and, climbing the stairs , the external patrol path from which you can enjoy the view of the chess square, the prisons, the captain's room, the attic that houses the chess game armory. After the visit to the village, if there is more time, you can continue the day with a visit to the Upper Castle or go as far as Bassano del Grappa or - further north - as far as the Asiago plateau.
