Visit Poggibonsi

Where: poggibonsi
(Poggibonsi)
Genre: culture

Poggibonsi falls within the province of Siena, in Tuscany and certainly deserves a thorough visit. The first urban nucleus dates back to 1155 thanks to Guido Guerra, of the Guidi counts, it was a Ghibelline settlement, therefore imperial, called Poggio Bonizio. Its history was short-lived, as in 1270 the Florentine militias conquered, bought and destroyed it. The current Poggibonsi was then built in another nearby site. The attraction of the place is certainly the Archeodrome, an open-air museum that faithfully reproduces life during the ninth century, at the time of Charlemagne. The Cassero, on the other hand, is an imposing city wall dating back to 1500, built by Lorenzo Il Magnifico, with a pentagonal plan, with a single access door communicating with the central parade ground. Also worthy of mention is the convent and basilica of San Lucchese patron saint of Poggibonsi and celebrated on April 28th. From the convent you can also enjoy wonderful sunsets. Of importance is certainly the Magione castle, built in 1200 along the via Franchigena, also used as a hospital complex during the Middle Ages and even inhabited for a period by the Knights Templar.
