Portogruaro and its beauties

Where: portogruaro
(Portogruaro)
Genre:

Portogruaro rises on the banks of the Lemene river. The city was founded in the Middle Ages and at the time had a strong mercantile vocation favored by the river, hence the name Portogruaro. On the Ponte dei Mulini there is a commemorative plaque depicting the lion of San Marco and the coat of arms of the city consisting of the bell tower and two cranes, a symbol of protection. The houses adjacent to the river were formerly warehouses used by merchants for river trade. The historic two mills, which in ancient times were used to grind cereals, have been restored and now host art exhibitions. On the right bank of the Lemene river you can admire various works of modern art and along this road you will arrive at the archaeological museum of Portogruaro. In Piazzetta della Pescheria there is an oratory dedicated to the Madonna in which an event is celebrated every August 15th that recalls the rite of the ancient fishermen who went up the river to pay homage to the Virgin. In Piazza della Repubblica stands the Town Hall adorned with Ghibelline merlons and a bell that in ancient times rang in case of danger or to announce the meetings that took place inside. In front of the building there are stone heads representing mythological characters. Not far away we find the Pozzo delle Gru and the War Memorial. The Monte di Pietà with its frescoed façade also overlooks Piazza della Repubblica. Come to Portogruaro and be captivated by its beauties.
