The National Park of Rock Engravings in Valcamonica

Where: capo-di-ponte
(Il Parco Nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri )
Genre: culture   folklore

The Rock Engravings National Park is located in Valcamonica, precisely in Capo di Ponte, in the province of Brescia. It is an area that is part of UNESCO for its historical and archaeological importance. In fact, in the park you can admire thousands of rock engravings on stone dating back to about ten thousand years ago. The possibility of carving on the rocks was given by the last glaciation that melted the glaciers, forming Lake Iseo and smoothing the rocks that became paper for our ancestors. The park can be visited through three paths and each rock is flanked by a descriptive sign. Among the most suggestive there is certainly the one marked with the number 1 because of its gigantic size. The engravings are of different nature and portray hunting scenes or everyday life, but there are also writings and other symbols. To date, it is not yet clear who left the engravings. Inside the park you can also taste the typical gastronomic products of the area in a farmhouse.
